2024 life & business review

An ER visit, some new clients, and a perfect baby boy.

On Jan. 3, 2024, I was ready to seriously attack some new year’s goals.

I was 4-mo’s into learning Jiu Jitsu, totally hooked. The big goal was to be the best in my class, with a 3-day/week training schedule fully carved out.

Excited as ever, I went to the gym that night.

And in <15-min, I had an accident and left early on crutches in agony.

Here I am at the ER after a 4-hour wait. The diagnosis: a broken ankle.

Leaving the ER at 1:30am.

The totally crazy part is that, ~10-hrs before, Jan. 3 was tracking as the best day of my life to-date.

My wife was pregnant and we heard our son’s heartbeat for the first time together.

I was going to be a Dad.

So somehow I had the best, and also the worst, day ever at the same time.

Even with the rough accident, 2024 got better. Way better.

I had surgery in January and was able to walk again by late March, just in time to prep the house for the baby’s arrival in July.

Since then, our life has been a series of magical moments with our son, Jack.

Becoming a father has changed me. I can’t even remember life without him. And I don’t ever want to.

On NYE, my wife and I agreed that 2024 was the best year of our lives.

On most days, it feels like all I did in 2024 was a) raise a newborn, and b) recover from a serious injury.

But when I zoom out and check the stats, I also grew a business.

Here is a high-level review of 2024 (for my practice):

  • added 7 ongoing clients - a combo of pure planning fees and assets under management.

  • completed 8 project-based engagements - when I have capacity, I do short-term engagements for those with limited needs, but need highly-customized advice.

  • connected with ~50 potential clients - some were a fit (noted above), some I never heard from again, most were referred away, and ~5 were smaller cases that I gave pro bono advice to.

It feels incredible only pursuing work with good people whom I think I’m the best-fit for.

There’s no rush in adding clients either. My primary focus is on adding ongoing households who will be a good match for 20+ years.

In 2025, I feel like a new man, extremely grateful for the position I’m in.

Life as a father is better than I could have imagined. And that confidence has certainly found its way into my work-life, helping me build the practice that helps the right people, using my best skills.

Jack is now 5-mos old and I mostly have a handle on all areas of my life.

Ready to take it to next level in 2025.
