How couples can talk about money (and enjoy it)
I have a core belief that couples who talk about money, stay together.
My parents split when I was 17. I was shielded from most of the issues, but I do remember a few big arguments related to money. We weren’t necessarily broke. But I think the stress came from just not being on the same page.
Because of those experiences, I now make sure that the couples I work with can openly talk about money together.
And because I value it so much, it’s probably no surprise that I actually married another financial planner 😃.
It is certainly our comfort zone. And with all the practice, we’ve found fun ways to connect over money. I hope these topics help you too.
In this piece:
My favorite money questions to ask my spouse
1. What did we do last year that we want more of?
2. What would make our lives easier today (that we can easily afford)?
3. If we won the lottery, how would our lives change? What would we pursue?
Take turns asking each other all the above. If you are doing the asking, you have 1 job - listen without judgment.
This is a lofty-on-purpose set of questions.
The answers themselves may not blow you away, and that’s okay. Goal #1 is simply dreaming together. Any success afterwards is merely a bonus.
When is the best time to talk?
Most experienced couples schedule everything, including these bonding moments. The only thing that matters is you find your time.
My wife and I love early mornings over coffee.
Perhaps your only free time is on a post-dinner dog walk, or lying in bed after the kids are finally tucked in.
The best time is any time you’re able to connect.
What if money is hard for us to talk about?
Everyone has money baggage, including me.
When the topic of money comes up, you may hear a lot of the same topics (or frustrations) you’ve heard for years. That's okay too.
This process isn’t about solving any problems in one sitting.
It's simply about creating a loving, open environment where everyone can say what they feel.
Marriage Insurance
For more on investing in your marriage, my colleague wrote a lovely post called Marriage Insurance which should be required reading for all newlyweds (and anyone wanting to level up their relationship game).
